Rooster Piri Piri, hellooooo Slough!

Hello hello hello 👋🏾

How are you and how’s your day/night going? Mine’s alright and even if it wasn’t, our little meet up here always seems to brighten my day.

So guess what I have for you today? My low down on a lovely place in Slough I discovered some weeks back. Ok, let me be entirely honest, it’s not like I chanced upon it. It was a Girl’s Lunch Out and our own eat-out expert, Ellen, was showing us one of her favourite places in Slough. And boy, was this place good!!!
Our girl squad out for lunch

It was  my first visit to Slough and Ellen couldn’t have chosen a more memorable place for us to have lunch. Lemme not over do it; as you can see, this place left me excited. There’s a broad smile on my face as I type. I will get straight to the descriptions and why I loved Roosters Piri Piri.

Ambience & Service

Just in case my initial mention of a memorable experience got to you thinking of fine dining and crystal glasses, my sincere apologies 🙈. It still was super memorable but you’d find out why in a bit.

Roosters Piri Piri in Slough is a typical Fast Food joint. Place your order  at the counter and then pick a seat. Unlifke many other Fast Food places, a waiter/waitress will bring you your meal if you’re eating in. However, if it’s a takeaway, you’d wait not far from the counter till your order is ready.

The menu is at the counter and the staff who took our order was particularly helpful and patient, explaining what we did not readily get, like the names of their sauces or how spicy a particular item was.

I loved the large clear window in front, it brought a lot of light into the room and made it feel spacious. And yes, it made for good aimless chatter from random observations from the street. Lol

It’s generally a calm place but gets super busy around lunch time. Super busy! But luckily most of the traffic was at the counter and not really at the seats. I guess most people were grabbing lunch and heading back to work or some other place they could squeeze during their lunch break. 🤔🤷🏾‍♀️😁

Now I’m ready for my most favourite section in our eat out posts 😋 taste and texture...

Taste & Texture

So first a picture of what we had...

Voilà!!! From the left, we had Piri Piri chicken wings with potato fries, mashed potatoes, butterfly wing chicken and sweet potato fries.

Since we did not have eeehhhhhverything at Roosters, I’ll talk about this. So coming from a West African country that has very sweet and flavourful sweet potatoes, I must confess I was not keen on eating UK’s sweet potato fries. Why? Because the sweet potatoes here pale in comparison to the ones back in Ghana... almost tasting watery and super bland. And I never got round to understanding how to cook it to get texture that is plausibly compensating to me. I really love potatoes, but not the sweet potatoes in these parts.

So I was in for a big surprise when I finally tasted the sweet potato fries. My goodness! It was delicious! It was sweet, it was flavourful, it was yummy! I’m really glad Birago and Ellen decided to convince me to have a taste of the sweet potato fries. It actually ended up becoming our latest addiction because we went hunting for it in Iceland after a lunch. I probably should have post dedicated to sweet potato fries and the interesting stories surrounding it including how we cook it, why we went looking for it and the ingredients that make the typically blander sweet potatoes taste like heaven!

And in case you missed it, this was my super highlight of my memorable Roosters Piri Piri experience. The discovery of UK’s sweet potato fries... lol

Now unto the other foods, the butterfly chicken was nice. It was super strong in some spice I am not used to and quite salty. In hindsight, I think that spicy taste may have been mustard. But seriously, don’t take my word at all, it’s a very wild guess. Plus, the menu at the counter will describe its ingredients to you if you get there. Lol

Now the mashed potato was dry with a fine crumb texture. It reminded me of  mashed yam in Ghana, right before you add it to the rest of your ɛtɔ ingredients. If you are a fan of dry mash then this is the place to visit. If, however, you are a fan of creamy mash try adding the mayonnaise they serve with your meal to it, Birago seemed to like it and it resembled creamy mash when she did that to the one they brought to our table. I think expecting creamy mash and then tasting dry mash for the first time was a shocker for me, so I didn’t try it after the mayo was added.

Another favourite was the Piri Piri chicken wings. Now Piri Piri is the hottest sauce they have there. And yes, it’s really hot. I love pepper so trust me on this one. Probably the hottest chicken I’ve had in any UK fast food so far, but just to be fair, I have not tried many fast foods just yet. One thing we discovered whilst eating was that adding some ketchup to the chicken is lovely. It converts it into delicious sweet chilli chicken wings immediately. So when you try it, do have it with ketchup and without ketchup and tell us which one you prefer.

The fries were crisp and the meal was just lush. Thanks to Ellen for her wonderful selection and Birago for letting us try the butterfly chicken.

So that’s a wrap on my low down on Roosters Piri Piri at Slough. I hope it convinces you try it if you’re ever in the area, and I hope more than ever, you love it as much as we did!

Till we meet here again, remember to keep having wonderful foodie experiences!

Spicy Goat Meat Stew

Hello hello!

Missed us in this corner of the universe? Well, I did! And I’m delighted at this moment we’re here today...

Guess what? We have another video in the house!! 🎉🎉

And this time, we are making some spicy Goat Meat stew. It is perfect as a base for tasty jollof rice or awesome for your homemade waakye. And talking about waakye, if you love waakye, you would know the awesome taste of waakye is heavily dependant on the stew more than anything else. So tah-daah, the next time you want to make some good homemade waakye, you know what to do... #winkwink. And if you don’t know how to make waakye at home yet, don’t worry, there’ll be a post on that in the near future.

Now back to today’s video? Lol

You know how I love telling the tale around some delicious food I had, well you wouldn’t guess what this tale is... it’s actually a #foodhackalert. So I must confess. I messed up my stew a bit. Jussssssst when it was almost ready, I tasted it and it was super salty 🤦🏾‍♀️. So racing through the archives of my mind, I tried remembering what I could do to reduce the saltiness. Water wasn’t going to work, extra tomato purée may have but that didn’t occur to me readily, and unfortunately I did not have access to good old charcoal (which I am honestly yet to confirm if it would have worked with this stew). Then I remembered! Sugar!!!

As a caveat, I’m generally for savoury dishes having traditionally (as in Ghanaian traditionally) savoury ingredients: no milk, no sugar... however, I would excuse a little sugar when I’m in desperate need of some sweet oniony taste but can only afford just half the onions needed to achieve that. With afford, I mean afford out of economy of time or cash or sheer convenience 🙈. A little sugar tends to go along way to give me the extra onion taste.

However, with this dish, I am super proud to say that little sugar risk I took to correct my overbearing saltiness actually did wonders! Not only that, it brought out that delicious extra-onion taste and surprisingly reduced the incredibly peppery fire that the stew had. Extremely glad it worked, and extremely glad I could be honest with this video, I hope you relax, enjoy and if you’re traditionally anti-sweet-in-savoury like me, you’d have a slight change of heart when you try this recipe.

Alright, drumroll 🥁🥁🥁, let the show begin 😎📽

Looks easy? It actually isn’t hard, but wait till you have a spoon of that incredible taste! I dare say it’s enough to win over some potential in-laws or put to shame some doubting friends (just don’t mention the sugar bit... lol).

Well, our post pretty much ends here today and I surely look forward to meeting you in another post some other day in this corner of our universe (I have no ooo idea why I enjoy saying that today... lol).  As usual, till we meet again, continue to have wonderful foodie experiences!

Homemade pizza!!!! No yeast, and counting firsts...

Hello there!

I'm beginning to wonder: if every cloud has a silver lining, then long breaks from posting definitely come with a huge bangs of enthusiasm when I start writing.

How are you and how has your own food is journey been so far? Mine has been awesome, in between moving house, changing occupations and relocating... boy, do I have a lot to type about in the days ahead.

For this post, I will be sharing how I made my first homemade pizza! Yes, my very own homemade pizza from scratch. A totally delightful experience for me, I made my own pizza dough and created my very own topping, Blazing Hot Wonder!

Since I get to give you my secrets in these posts, guess what? The Blazing Hot Wonder didn't start out with that name at all, or even with its deliciously fiery taste. It was intended to be savoury-sweet and tasty for sure, but I underestimated the small paprika-like pepper I added that ended up being hotter than any cayenne pepper I had ever used. And voilà! The Blazing Hot Wonder was born. 😄 So if you're not a fan of yor tongue being set on peppery fire, you could omit the pepper from your ingredients when anything it out. The sweet peppers will manage to give you the pepper flavouring effects without the intense 'heat'. I guess it comes to show that pizzas can have any toppings you want and many inventions are just common mistakes made viable in some way. Isn't that awesome to remember?

Ok, back to the pizza... Another first this pizza brought was my first foodie recipe video. It started out as a few shots and some fun with Google Photos and then ended up with some Photo Grid editting and the full recipe. 😃 My special special thanks to Ellen Mimi Owusu for the encouragement to create the video, and as you can see it has left me perpetually pleased as punch 😁.

So today, I won't be writing or posting pictures as much as I normally do with our blog posts here at Ndudu tales. Instead, I will be leaving you with my first homemade video showing how I made my first homemade pizza (both in pizza crust and pizza topping)! Do relax, enjoy your viewing and don't forget to give us feedback by leaving a comment below or reaching out to us any other way you are comfortable with. Because guess what, we'll only eventually get better at this and would love to have you on board!

This pizza was made without yeast and inspired by the following recipes that taught me how to make the dough and the passata (the tomato stew like base that comes with most pizzas).
Yeast-free Pizza Dough:
Tomato Passata:
You would notice these in the credits of the video.

And now, my long awaited moment, and hopefully yours as well... Lol... Ofosua's first homemade pizza recipe... #drumroll
